What type of Writer do you want to be?

What type of writer do you want to be? It isn’t as clear cut as fiction vs. non-fiction anymore.

For the fiction writer, you need to consider the length of the stories you will write. Are you a novel writer or short story writer? You need to consider variables such as genre (Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi, etc). A lot of genres can be further pared down into more specific categories. An example of this would be dark fantasy, high fantasy, sword and sorcery fantasy, etc.

You can’t read a “how to write” book, author’s interview or writing blog without hearing something to the effect of you can’t make money writing. Writers write because they have to. I always thought this was crap. Mainly because it was being espoused by individuals who had made money writing!
